About Open Source

Open source work often begins with an itch and a late evening. Someone builds a thing for themselves, shares the code, and strangers start to depend on it. This category gathers the founders who made that choice on purpose, and who then faced the harder question: how do you keep a project open and still keep the lights on?

Here you will find products and businesses whose code is public, from finished apps to libraries that other developers build on. Read the founder's own account of why they opened the source, what they decided to charge for, and how they work with contributors. Listings appear newest first, and you can sort by community votes to see what people have backed. Votes can never be bought, so the order tells you something honest.

Open Source: questions answered

What belongs in the Open Source category?
Products and businesses whose source code is publicly available, including those that sell hosting, support or a paid tier alongside the open code. Choose the subcategory that matches how people use the product: as an app, a library, something they run themselves, or an AI model.
How do I choose between open source apps and self-hosted tools?
Open source apps are finished products you use, wherever they run. Self-hosted tools are defined by where you run them: your own server, your own rules. If your pitch is about control over data and infrastructure, pick self-hosted. If it is about the product itself, pick apps.
How do I get my open source project listed?
Go to /submit and paste your website address. An AI drafts the profile from that site, then you check and edit every field before anything goes live. A paid launch costs $5, while a free listing joins a queue of about 6-8 weeks.
How are listings ordered on this page?
Newest listings appear first by default, so recent launches get seen. Visitors can switch to sorting by community votes. Votes can never be bought, which means a high position reflects people who tried the project and chose to back it.
What should I look at when comparing open source options?
Check the licence and what it lets you do, then read how the founder describes maintenance and funding. Look at the documentation, how contributors are treated, and whether the paid side of the business is clearly separated from the open code. The founder story usually reveals these.
